Greek-Bulgarian Family Lives at Munich Airport

A Greek-Bulgarian family has been living at the airport in the German city of Munich for almost six months, writes the German Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily. The three-member family consists of a Greek citizen who was named only as Athanasios, a Bulgarian woman Albena, and her son Nikola.

Albena and Athanasios arrived at the Munich Airport around half a year ago, hoping to find better life, home and work. Five weeks ago, Albena’s son Nikolay joined his mother in Munich, since his grandmother was no longer able to support and take care of him.

The three sleep at the seats in the waiting room. “Everything seems better than the option to return home. We stand no chance in our countries,” Athanasios said. A year ago Athanasios’ life was completely different. He worked as DJ at the entertainment establishment of a popular radio host in Thessaloniki and even opened his own club.

He said Greece’s economic crisis forced him to sell the club and start working as fruits and vegetables vendor. He met Albena around five years ago when she came to Thessaloniki from Bulgaria to work. They said they want to work in Germany. There was no information on why they couldn’t leave the terminal.
