Calls for Zaroulia’s Removal from Council of Europe

The European anti-racist organisation EGAM (European Grassroots Anti-racist Movement) which participates in the parliamentarian assembly of the Council of Europe, has joined other groups in demanding the expulsion of a Greek Member of Parliament from the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party from the body’s Equality Anti-discrimination Committee.

Eleni Zaroulia is the wife of the party’s leader, Nikos Michaloliakos, who said he doesn’t believe there was a Holocaust in World War II. She has declared that immigrants in Greece are “sub-humans.” The party wants all immigrants out of Greece and has an openly anti-Semitic, anti-gay, ultra-religious platform and has been tied to a number of violent incidents.

Her appointment by the Council has been condemned by members of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) who said it opposes the party’s xenophobic and racist rhetoric. Abraham Foxman, director of the ADL, said: “The despicable ideology of Golden Dawn stands in the most stark contrast imaginable to the goals of the Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination.

EGAM has asked Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who is also anti-immigrants, to back her expulsion as the country’s delegate to the body and said the committee’s leader should not accept her appointment. The body, which is based in Strasbourg, is comprised of members from 47 European nations. It was established to promote democracy, and to protect human rights and the rule of law in Europe.
