UN Fretful Over Immigrant Attacks in Greece

United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights Navi Pillay says her agency is deeply concerned about recent attacks on immigrants and asylum seekers in Greece and other countries.

She said there is increasing discrimination against immigrants, especially in countries hit with debt crises such as Greece, where people are looking for scapegoats. She made her remarks at a conference in Geneva about human rights issues.

Pillay, while talking about uprisings in Bahrain and Syria, diverted to Europe, and talked about Greece. “I recognize the harsh economic condition in which many countries are at the moment but human rights of immigrants and refugees must be protected,” she underlined.

“I am also deeply concerned by recent attacks against immigrants and asylum seekers and by the fact that the police look unable or unwilling to protect the victims,” she added. Illegal Immigrants in Greece have been targeted by the government for detention and deportation and regularly assaulted, with some pointing the finger at the neo-Nazi group Golden Dawn which has publicly stated it wants all immigrants out of the country.
