Bulgarian Firefighters Sent to Help Greece Fight Wildfires

With wildfires raging all over Greece during the past week, neighboring countries are sending assistance, and Bulgaria said it is sending 10 firefighters and two water trucks to assist in the attempt to extinguish a long-lasting blaze around the Mt. Athos area where Orthodox monks live. The Bulgarian St. Georgi Zograf monastery is also located in the area.

The Bulgarian team left from southwestern city of Blagoevgrad yesterday, according to Bulgarian Chief Commissar Nikolay Nikolov. They will aid Greek firefighters to try control the wildfire. Greek fire brigade is on alert following orders of Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Defense Minister Panos Panagiotopoulos.
