IOC President Jacques Rogge Calls London Home of The Olympics; Forgets Greece

Jacques Rogge London Home of Olympics

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge frustrated millions of Greeks around the world as he inaccurately called London “home of the Olympics,” during his opening ceremony speech.

Greece, the country that created the concept of the Olympic games more than 2,500 years ago, was not mentioned even once by the IOC president during his speech.

Rogge described London as home of the Olympics and explained that this is because the English capital hosts the Olympics for the third time.

No matter how he will try to explain further his statement, Rogge’s words remain a historical inaccuracy. The fact that he also forgot  to mention Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, during his speech was another great mistake.

Political Reaction

Terence Quick, spokesman for the Greek political party Independent Greeks said that Rogge’s comment was “historically ignorant, unacceptable, provocative and in keeping with the commercialization of the Olympic Ideals.”

He called for the IOC chief to apologize.

“He should retract his comments straight away and apologize to Greeks and Greece, which gave birth to the Olympic Games,” said Quick.

The Greek government and the Greek Olympic Committee have not reacted yet to Rogge’s comment.

Read Jacques Rogge full speech as he delivered it in the Olympic opening ceremony in London on July 27, 2012.

Your Majesty,

Your Majesties,

Your Royal Highnesses,

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

In just a few moments, the Olympic Games will officially return to London for the third time, setting an unmatched record for hosting the Games that spans more than a century. Thank you, London, for welcoming the world to this diverse, vibrant, cosmopolitan city yet again.

It has taken a lot of hard work by many people to get us to this point. I want to thank the entire team at the London Organizing Committee – superbly led by Lord Coe – for their excellent and hard work. I also want to thank all the public authorities who have helped ensure that these Games will leave a lasting positive legacy long after the closing ceremony.

And, of course, we are all grateful to the thousands of dedicated volunteers who are being so generous with their time, their energy and their welcoming smiles.

For the first time in Olympic history all the participating teams will have female athletes. This is a major boost for gender equality.

In a sense, the Olympic Games are coming home tonight. This great, sports-loving country is widely recognized as the birthplace of modern sport. It was here that the concepts of sportsmanship and fair play were first codified into clear rules and regulations. It was here that sport was included as an educational tool in the school curriculum.

The British approach to sport had a profound influence on Pierre de Coubertin, our founder, as he developed the framework for the modern Olympic Movement at the close of the 19th century. The values that inspired de Coubertin will come to life over the next 17 days as the world’s best athletes comepte in a spirit of friendship, respect and fair play.

I congratulate all of the athletes who have earned a place at these Games. And to the athletes, I offer this thought: Your talent, your dedication and commitment brought you here. Now you have a chance to become true Olympians. That honor is determined not by whether you win, but by how you compete. Character counts far more than medals.

Reject doping. Respect you opponents. Remember that you are all role models. If you do that, you will inspire a generation.

These Games bring many hopes. Hope for harmony and peace between the 204 National Olympic Committees. Hope to see the young generations inspired by the values of sport. Hope that these Games continue to promote sustainble development.

Dear Athletes, make us dream.

I now have the honor to ask Her Majesty the Queen to open the Games of the XXX Olympiad.

Screw London and the IOC president He is a liar and a scum beg. He need to grow up. The whole worlds Knows the Greeks started the Olypic and He is so stupid he need to go fly a kite and know his history. If it was not for the Greeks that would never be an Olypics. Just a stupid politision. Just another Moron. Fuck Him. And the Horse he rode on The greeks should be mad at him low Life.

  • Alexandra

I completely agree with you.We Greeks know and so does the whole world,so fuck him and fuck Natasha Keller also for calling the Greek athletes barefooted aseholes. Its a shame though because it seems as if the Olympics have lost there real meaning, and its all about politics now…

This is not the only Rogge faux pas, although it is a serious one and it demonstrates how
unfit this colorless, dour, politically correct man is for the position he currently holds.  His shameless pandering to Arabs and Muslims and his refusal to hold a “minute of silence”
at the opening ceremony to commemorate the Israeli victims of Muslim fanaticism in
Munich are a disgrace.  It embarrasses me that he holds the same citizenship as I do.

  • Helenamich

I am a proud Greek. I demand an apology and an explanation from this old senile poor excuse for Olympic Committee head. I would like to know why Greece was not mentioned as the country that founded and brought the Olympics to the world. It is Mr. Rogge’s obligation to recall the history of these games and to be accurate with his statements to the 1 billion people who were watching. I believe there is ground to sue this individual and the Olympic Committe for this false information. This has a negative impact on Greece in more ways than just political. I would like to start a petition to sue him and the Olympic Committe. Whoever is with me please let me know.

    Helena

  • Alex

Crazy nationalist loony in the house, beware everyone!!

  • Alex

The planet does not care one bit that 2500 years ago some people in what is today Greece created the Olympic Games in a rudimentary form. Nationalist Hrisi Avgi supporters have a right to be offended obviously, but most people are smart enough to realize that, after three millenia, people living in that area are not the same anymore. Greece in fact should be glad that it still symbolically has the right to enter first in the teams parade. And Rogge is right; London can be called the birthplace of modern sports and fair play..

  • Roger M Robillard

While it may be true that the Olympic tradition started in Greece.  That tradition was lost and then  revived by Pierre De Coubertin.  That he, De Coubertin,  acknowleged the Greek  Historical root of the grek games does not belie that his inspiration was equally, if not more greatly,  centered on the sense of fair play and sportsmanship which had emerged in Great Britain.  The words used by Rogge in his comments were centered on the athletes and not only on the games.  This seems to  me to be a tempest in a tea pot.  The fact that some comments are using four letter words is certainly not indicative of the fair play and celebration of sport in its highest form.

  • Anusnii

It would be nice if you could spell Olympic in the first place.

  • Josh

You Greeks need to learn English first before asking anyone to apologise. He did not say Great Britain is the home of the Olympics, he said, ‘In a sense, the Olympic Games are coming home tonight ’. What sense? He explains that Great Britain is widely recognised as the home of most modern games and these games were coming home.  You idiots need English classes as a matter of urgency!

  • ThisIsSparta

Shut the hell up and get your facts right.

  • Priggipisa

Roger, you have a point.. but it wasn’t a matter of the Greeks just dropping the Olympics, it was the Roman Empire that forbid them (something to do w/paganism they thought-whatever), but after Greece was invaded by the Romans, they had to deal with the Persians & the turks -so bit hard to think of the Olympics when you’re fighting for your country & your life.

However, your point makes one more thing clear, London IS NOT the home of the Olympics, because even at the urgin of Pierre deCoubertin to start the IOC, the FIRST modern Olympics was in 1896 and yes in GREECE because
Mr. deCoubertin realized that’s where the 1st one should be.  The 2nd was Paris in 1900, and London wasn’t until 1908 -so HOW ON EARTH he figures LONDON as “HOME OF THE OLYMPICS” IS BEYOND ME!

As Forrest Gump said, stupid is as stupid does, or in this case as stupid says.

  • Priggipisa

Explain please – how on earth LONDON is the “HOME OF THE OLYMPICS” or the “birthplace of modern sports” as you put it?   London had nothing to do with the Ancient Olympics nor when the modern Olympics started again (a French man was more responsible for that)..  is it because they have great athletes? Than America should get that title since they hold the most medals!

  • Priggipisa

Why should Greeks learn English?  If they live in Greece, they do not need to know English, and most Greeks know at least 2 other languages, so why is English so necessary?   Everyone should learn Greek, and Latin for that matter, since most English words are derived FROM the GREEK and Latin.

  • ProudToBeGreek

Greeks Motherfucking bitch Know English.Every Greek Learns English so that he can be able to find a job

  • NA

GET OUR FACTS RIGHT.LONDON ISN’T THE HOME OF THE OLYMPICS

                                              END OF STORY

  • Priggipisa

Μη βριζεις… με το καλο καλυτερα.. ξερεις που λενε με μελι…  :)

  • Priggipisa

By the way, I have no problem reading English and above article states “Rogge described London as home of the Olympics.”

So you need to read again – forget what he implies, we can’t read his mind, I read what was said… describing London as Home of the Olympics, yeah ok for 2012, and every 4 years it has a NEW HOME! duh!

  • Soultana

London “the home of the Olympics”?
That was announced by Jacques Rogge International Olympics Commetee president?
Jacques Roggs is a Royal moron for making a stupid statement as that, at the Olympic opening ceremony!
How can  some one like  him be in the international Olympics Commitee as president, for his qualifications indicate toilet  genator?
His statement purposely announced against Greece!

2500 years ago my pro-fathers created the Olympic games in Greece, while the British were  savages!
My pro-fathers pass the light in the whole world unselfishly and mostly in England.

England has stolen the Parthenon Marbles that belong to Greece!!
This  marbles are the Greek  images of my pro-fathers and pro- mothers, placed in British museums, the British claiming that they are theirs!
Greece has requested for the  marbles to return to its home land, and  Brittans refused!

  • Argyro

I’m also a Greek but I think the Doctors comments were taking out of context, What he was trying to say is that the Olympic movement of fair play and a fair go, linking Sport and Education come from England…Nothing sinister about it.

  • Soultana

I am In  with you Helena. Sue that son of a B-rittan!

  • Christomichael

Mr. Roggehe was High on weed when he made his speech.  There is only one home for the Olympics and thar is Greece.

  • Tomoynitismanassoy

Ban the use of the name “Olympic” games, ban the use of the flame from ancient Olympia for every country that wants the next games and lets see what they will end up doing for the next olympics. Fuck all.
Everything started from Greece folks. Respect is expected.

  • Priggipisa

Very well said Soultana, and for the person who said who cares what happened 2500 years ago, well if the UK didn’t care than why would they keep all the stolen artifacts of Greece!  Obviously they’re importance and value is recognized.  However, they should all be returned to their HOME!   If they want us to acknowledge London as “home” of sports & fair play, they FIRST need to acknowledge that the GREECE  is home for the Parthenon marbles -and Britain needs to return them to their HOME.

  • Ares

Alex..you should go visit a doctor. Something’s wrong with your head man. Take it as a friendly advise

  • Ares

    @Josh

“you Greeks need to learn English first before asking anyone to…@^&%&%5 ” OOOOPPPS!!!! You need to find a new word to complete the sentence man.. ‘Cause the word “apologise” is greek. (apologia. απολογια).Please say sth else and make a fool of yourself once more :)

The IOC should be ashamed of themselves, for refussing to hold a minuets silence for the deadly attack in Munich, forty years ago.Israeli team murdered by palestinians.such a tragic time for the families, and the IOC decide its not worth a moment of respect, Shame on each of you.One would think you were anti semetic! also for whoever is responsible for not naming Jerusalem as the capitol of Israel, you have sent out the wrong message were the palestinians think they are entitled to half of Jerusalem, there seat is in Gaza.God clearly says in his word,I will bless those who bless you,and curse those who curse you.speaking of his people Israel.its a universal law, nobody is exempt.and something for you to take to heart.
                                                                                                                margaretbenjamin.

  • An Englishman

Alex you are nothing but a little brainwashed marxist useful idiot. Firstly, 95% of modern day greeks have genetic ties to the ancient greeks. This have been backed up by extensive research by many respectable universities, professors, historians & anthropologists worldwide. Greece is the rightful home of the Olympic games, both ancient & modern. Mr. Rogge owes the greek people an apology for making such a statement.

There are millions of people around the world who will not equate the British with fair play. Go and ask anyone from their former colonies. And this Golden Dawn party that got 7% of the vote is nothing compared to the 18% vote the fascist party in very liberal France got. Oh yes…and your beloved Britain has plenty of those fascists too who cause trouble with the muslim population & immigrants of all walks of life.

  • Aetos01

I guess he, thought he was in Greece. Because the British royal family is more or less half Greek.
Prince Philip, the Queens husband. Prince Charles the first born son. Prince William and Harry the Grandsons of the Queen 25% Greek.

  • Aetos01

Oh god, how things get out of control and people divert from the subject.

I am Greek. Is my English good enough so far. My dear Pohmy friend.

What is a Pohmy? It is an accronym from “Prisoner Of His/Her Majesty”.

It is what English are called by others. Just ask the Irish.

The Olympics are of Greek Origin from Olympia in Greece.

London is just a HOST country in 2012.

We are honoured as Greeks to have our culture hosted around the world.

The rules of fairness and sportmanship, were not invented by the English in London. But by Hercules in Greece.

The British Museum, should be paying royalties for using the Parthenon Marble to generate an income. How much do you think they owe to this day?

The English have caused most of the wars and problems around the world where ever they had colonies. How much did they take out of India alone in regards to man power, natural resources and treasures to England?

If one looks closely it was they that were the problem behind the unrests in the middle east as it was they that controlled Palestine in the 50`s and 60`s. Just as it was they who were in Cyprus. And they who forced China to sign over management of Hong Kong for 99 years because China wanted to stop opium trading and lost in a war against the British in the late 1800`s

  • Alex

Oh, because of your foul mouth and especially because of your name, I am really afraid now!!!! But I am definitely much more afraid of the loony who “believe there is ground to sue this individual”. Ok, your work here is done you two. You can go back to the loony asylum, have a nice day!

  • ares grigorakis

@ Αn Englishman  Congrats for being unbiased

  • ares grigorakis

@ phil mcleod  well said Phil!

  • Soultana

London is the home of the NWO!
London is the home of the thieves!

  • Soultana

Roger it does not matter if the Olympics were off for sometimes. The main principle is, the birth of the Olympic games is GREECE! Not London!
We are not stupid, we  know what this idiot is hiding under his  sleeve!.
That is why he made that comment.

The Olympic Games  were developed to win with out having a war!
Evidently this JACK ROYAL ASS Is causing a war!
For, he should go race pigs his qualifications, and stay the hell out of the Olympics!

  • Athenean

Josh you are a proper idiot completely ignorant of what culture and civilisation means. You should go and learn your language and world history before you open your mouth in an arrogant british way. The word “home” in the context he used meant ”BIRTHPLACE” where something started, and not the rubbish you added with your own words. Go and educate yourself so you can open your blind British  arrogant eyes, perhaps then you will see the world differently and may understand then how low you have been by your remarks. You need to eat some humble pie Mr arrogant. GT

  • Athenean1

Another ignorant being where the hell do they come from???

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/OYZ3EVA6PCRTGCOGTDC744TSEE Walter

To translate from English, this guy said: “Olympics are coming home to the birthplace of modern sport” which is perfectly legal, fine and correct.

    Calm down :)

  • Faethon

Mr Rogge is right, London is the real home of Olympis, as it is widely known, the Olympic Games started from ancient Celts and Saxons, and the Olympic flame was not lit in ancient Olympia, dedicated to Zeus, but in Stonehedge, by druids.

  • ares grigorakis

Oh, I forgot..   GIVE BACK OUR ANCIENT SCULPTURES!  They are part of  OUR history, not yours. To all english people: Do the right thing and support Greece on this one. You would do the same for your country if someone had  STOLEN  a part of your history Those sculptures belong to Greece only.

  • aie

Well done you can read what the article states but that is not a quote from Rogge, just how the reporter has interpreted it.

  • aie

Good question why learn English. If one is to comment on a speech made in English, then one must be able to understand the nuances of the the language used as this may well be missed in translation.
Latin is pretty much dead no longer used language and Greek is only spoke by at most 1% of the population, where as English somewhere between 25% and 30%. You reasoning to say that we should learn it because it is derived from it makes little sense like I say. Latin which counts for roughly 50% is a DEAD language and Greek only accounts for 5%, so by your reasoning we should also learn Flemish and German …..

  • aie

Because as far as i am aware this is called the modern Olympics. If it was called the ancient Olympics then fair enough you could come and moan about it.
It is called the modern Olympics that means events that happened some 2500 years ago have very little resemblance to the modern Olympics now. Great Britain inspired De Coubertin to create the modern Olympics. Great Britain is the birth place of modern sport( 1/3rd of the sports in the Olympics, the rules by which they are governed and played to where defined in GB ), the Olympics is modern sport, so by logical definition the, the modern Olympic games are coming home.
Our reticence to participate or even start the modern olympic games was down to our arrogance as a nation, these where the games that we created, played and ruled. Why would we want to play with what we saw as inferior foreigners. This is especially true of football. Our holding of the 1908 games while not planned, as we stepped in when Italy said they couldn’t hold it, and it was this games then in effect was the blueprint as to what was to come for the next 100+ years.

  • Athenean1

Alex you are an ignorant idiot!!!

  • ares grigorakis

Let them talking..I just wish they move all the greek words from their vocabulary, and I mean ALL. Even simple words that they use everyday and they think they are not greek like the word “one” or “ocean” or “open” (ένα-ena-one, ωκεανός-okeanos-ocean, οπή-οpi-open), their whole language is based on the greek language. I would really love to see that :)

  • ares grigorakis

“The modern Olympics” and ‘The ancient Olympics”..My God, what a circus the world has become. They stole the ancient sculptures because they have nothing of their own to show to the world. They now try to steal the Spirit, the Idea. Because that’s what the Olympic Games are. Oh well, their opening ceremony show exactly what they have to show to the world. H.Potter and J.Bond.
As I know that I am a 17 year old guy who loves Greece and knows that Greece is the mother of all,  the same way I know that the Olympic Games were, are and will be greek.

  • Evange Bozinis

The IOC Chief, Mr. Rogge, should have been disqualified from any type of Olympic participation for whatever he was smoking. Obviously he was not all there.

  • Hellas

The cold hearted Olympic comittee President didnt forget hes been involved with the Olympic games for over 11 years he knows clearly who the Olympics belong to ( GREECE ) he is just a co;d carn artist never smile always has a cold attitiude never liked him never will get him the fuck of the committe go back and kiss Donkeys asses with UK now thats royalty
