German Experts Predict Six London Olympic Medals for Greece

As is customary, before the Olympic Games begin in each hosting country, experts from around the world make their predictions about how many and what medals each participant country will receive. A team of researchers at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, completed their relevant study, which suggests among others that Greece will win six medals in London (two silver and two bronze medals) instead of the four medals won in Beijing in 2008.

The German team of experts predicted that Greece will rank 37th to 44th in the medal list, sharing its ranking with eight more countries, such as Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Slovenia, India, Mexico, Sweden, Slovenia and Thailand.

China is expected to top the list (102 medals) followed by the USA (100), Russia (71), the UK (57), Australia (43), France (39), Germany (36), South Korea (31) and Cuba (29).

The experts conducted their estimations by entering a broad series of statistic variables, such as political, economic, cultural and demographic data as well as past performances, in a complicated econometric model.

To test their results, the team used the same model to retrospectively measure the success of the model in previous Olympic Games. The test data showed correlation of the findings of 97.4% with the actual medals won during the Athens 2004 and of 96.9% with the actual medals won during the Beijing 2008.

Dutch Infostrada Sports Group providing sports statistics and sports information services also made the same prediction of Greece winning six medals in these Games.
