‘Mapping Cyprus, 1191-2012’ Exhibition in Brussels in the Framework of the Cypriot EU Presidency

A massive exhibition dedicated to the anticipated Cypriot Presidency of the EU Council due to start on July 1st under the title “Mapping Cyprus, 1191-2012” will be presented in Brussels.

BOZAR – Centre for Fine Arts will host the exhibition presenting Cyprus through significant historical moments, the lasting importance of its geographical position and, of course, showcasing Cypriot art in its greatest periods, mostly the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine eras.

The exhibition takes an in-depth look at this crossroads of cultures and at the conflicts and exchanges that have shaped it while also focusing on today’s divided island.

On the second day of the Presidency on July 2nd, President Demetres Christofias will pay a visit to the exhibition, which aims at promoting the timeless relations between Cyprus and Europe and how these have been expressed through the work of eminent European painters, cartographers, authors and even everyday people.

More than 45 religious icons from Cypriot monasteries and churches will be on display during the exhibition. There will also be maps, manuscripts, publications, photographs and other valuable material from European sources, museums, libraries and galleries for the audience to admire.
