Greek Orthodox Chapel Inaugurated in Austria

Greek-Orthodox Metropolitan Bishop and Nuncio of Hungary and central Europe Arsenios held the inauguration service at the Virgin Mary Chapel at the Artmuseum of Wanderviertel in Austria.

Many members of the Greek society of Austria attended the service.  Representatives of the Macedonia Intercultural Association, such as President Harilaos Zikos and Johann Beck-Managetta of the University of Vienna, were also present at the inauguration ceremony.

Greek artist Makis Varlamis was the person who undertook the construction of this Chapel. As a result, he toured Bishop Arsenios and the other guests around the Art Museum, which also belongs to him. After six years of hard work, in 2009, Austrian governor Erwin Pröll inaugurated the Museum, too.

The Art Museum expands into 14,000 square metres. Its red walls as well as a mini-park with huge colorful sculptures welcome visitors. In the surrounding area of the Museum, there is a small ancient theatre and the chapel devoted to the Virgin Mary with icons brought to the Austrian city of Schrems from Greece.
