The German Press Announces Greek Elections

Needless to say the German press has published many detailed articles hot-off-the-press about the recent Greek elections. Correspondents from Athens have described developments in Greece while other renowned journalists are writing opinion articles about the results.

Sueddeutsche Zeitung writes that New Democracy’s victory reflects a power that in reality does not exist. “Games will go on in the deeply fragmented Greece,” stresses the German editor in his article entitled “Dead-end Politics.”

Bild declares “The World Takes a Breath” adding that “world markets are extremely relieved due to Samaras’ victory.” Bild‘s correspondent comments, however, that there is great need for Greece to form a coalition government immediately and predicts that PASOK party will not refuse to participate in the coalition this time around.

“Crisis goes on,” declares Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and says that New Democracy does not have enough MPs elected to form a majority government on its own. “They may need PASOK’s contribution, but we should not overlook the fact that these two parties made Greece go bankrupt,” continues the German reporter.

Economic newspaper Der Handelsblatt reports that “Greece does not have much time available” and reminds Germans that Greek problems remain visible and thus, “The Greek government must work twice as hard to help its country.”

Moreover, Die Welt wonders if Greece will receive the third monetary safety package and refers to the future negotiations with Germany as a period “which might be really disturbing for Germany.”

“Greece remains a euro-barrel without bottom,” comments Stuttgarter Nachrichten with this totally negative title. However, it expresses the opinion that “German Chancellor Angela Merkel may not continue her strict policy against Greece.”

As for Der Spiegel, it writes that new election results offer only “little hope” to Greece and predicts that this was only “a short break for Greece in order to breath a while.” The German editor concludes that “a new chaos seems possible if Greek parties fail to form a coalition government.”
