Municipality of Kalamaria wins in European competition

On Friday night, the Municipality of Kalamaria, Thessaloniki, received the RegioStars Award granted by the EU as part of the annual meeting between the EU and representatives of municipalities and regions. Out of 107 projects, five won the RegioStar 2012 prize. TheĀ  five prizes were awarded by category: smart growth, sustainable development, development without exclusion, development of underdeveloped town areas and access to information.

The Municipality of Kalamaria won in the category of sustainable development. The crowned project is called GRaBs (Green and Blue Space Adaptation for Urban Areas and Eco Towns), and involves a partnership of 13 municipalities across the Union. It started in 2007 with municipalities from the UK and expanded later to include municipalities from eight more countries. The main goal of the project is to facilitate the exchange of know-how between municipalities and regions on how to reduce waste, plan more effective projects, use better green technology and build awareness in local communities. The project is funded with 302 million Euros by Interregional Cooperation Programme INTERREG IVC, financed by the European Union’s Regional Development Fund.
