De Morgen Refers to the Compensation Demands by Greek Victim Families

The Flemish newspaper in Belgium De Morgen has shed light into a critical subject: the compensation of  Nazi victims of  World War II. Under the title “Distomo,” the Belgian daily makes reference to demands by Greek families claiming damages from the German government.

The article notes that Greece has suffered greatly from the Nazi atrocities during the years of the German occupation. However, the Greek government has not claimed its rightful compensation over the years, so Germany has come to regard the matter as closed. However, descendants of Greek victims have never given up their efforts to take what they deserve and have actually taken the matter to the International Court of Justice in the Hague, the journalist explains.

Sixty eight years after the tragic events, the subject of the German compensation comes to the forefront, as Greek leftish party SYRIZA has claimed an estimated €168 million in damages from the German government for the victims in Distomo. The article also notes that SYRIZA has not added ‘interest’ to that sum.

The same demand comes from another Greek party, the Independent Greeks under Panos Kammenos, as the journalist points out, even though the two parties hold diametrically opposed political platforms.

The Belgian journalist concludes by saying that this money could give a major relief to the tested Greek people, but it is highly unlikely that their efforts will prove fruitful.
