Debate On Parthenon Marbles in the UK

Do the Parthenon Marbles legally belong  to the British Museum? Would Greece be able to take care of them? Should we take them back? These two questions are the main inquiries of a debate that has taken place for the past 200 years, or maybe more.

Both British and Greek opinion on this matter has changed significantly over the course of time, as the two countries change, but the issue remains largely unresolved. In a crucial period for Greece, when international media keeps attacking the country, but also a month before the London Olympic Games, Intelligence Squared, the world’s premier non-profit organization for debate and intelligent discussion, is presenting a debate on this matter.

Is now the best time for the Marbles to be sent back to Athens? Could this move be regarded as a friendly gesture towards Greece or even as homage to the country? Or is the UK’s argument, that Greece does not have the necessary funds to preserve the Marbles, more pertinent than ever?

Intelligence Squared Greece will present a debate on the repatriation of the Parthenon Marbles to Athens at the Acropolis Archaeological Museum in an inclusive live-broadcast from London on Monday, June 11 at 8:30 p.m.

The entrance is free but reservations are required. The debate will be held in English with simultaneous Greek translation.
