Finnish Greeks Compare Greece to Finland: ‘It is Better in the North’

While crisis makes the situation in Greece even worse, more and more young Greeks pack their suitcases and head for other European or non-states, in order to search for a job.

Greeks in Finland comment on the current situation in their homecountry and conclude that their choice to migrate may have been quite good. Returning “home” is the last thing they have on their minds right now.

Of course, with relatives and friends stayed behind, the Finland-based Greeks keep in contact with their homecountry. They read the Greek news and are informed by their friends or media about the life in Greece, and realize that their decision offered them a great future, or at least, greater than they would expect back home.

Irene Kostas, a Greek living in Helsinki and working in fashion, says that “Finland’s lowest wages are high compared to the income level in Greece.” Kostas spent her childhood in Greece and later moved to Finland to study. She dreamt of returning some day but now this dream has dissipated.

Dimitrios Rantzos, an Orthodox Christian religion teacher living in Espoo, claims that he does not intend to return to Greece. On the contrary, he does his best to acclimate fellow countrymen to Finland. “You need to be systematic to become successful here,” he adds.

Despite the climate differences, Greeks agree that Finland offers many opportunities if someone is willing to work hard, and “Greeks are very hardworking people,” comments Kostas.
