Philip II of Macedonia Statue in Skopje Defies NATO

One day after NATO’s statement that FYROM should solve the Macedonian name problem, before entering NATO, Skopje put up the statue of Philip II of Macedonia, father of Alexander the Great, in downtown Skopje.

A year before, they also erected a 22-meter-high statue of Alexander the Great. Gruevski’s governmental officials decided to react to NATO’s announcement in this way, with the statue erection in front of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

In order to avoid diplomatic episodes, as they try to convince Europe that it’s about time for the country to enter the EU, they named the statue “warrior.” They came up with the same idea for Alexander the Great’s statue, which was called “ranger warrior.”

Philip’s statue is 15 meters high and at its base, there is a fountain. The sculptor is Valentina Stevanovska, who is also responsible for Alexander’s statue.

Both statues, including many others similar to them, are included in the government’s project “Skopje 2014,” launched in 2010. Its goal is to give the capital a more monumental appearance, by building statues, bridges and museums, a program expected to cost about 500 million euros.

The attempt of turning Skopje into a theme park is severely criticized and is regarded to be a nationalistic kitsch, as unemployment rates hit high.

viva Makedonija! Greeks are one pathetic nation. Leave us alone. Let us live your lives. Take care of your own bankrupt country. Macedonia for the Macedonians!!!

  • Mayadaniels

Even after a project worth 500 million euro Macedonia is not broke…that speaks for itself! Macedonia existed and will exist, deal with it!

Whatever, as long as it muck you greeks, or helens or … Who are you in fact ?! Do you know?! Wanna be Macedonians too?! Wont happen. You should be born as Macedonian, love Macedonia, and celebrate Macedonian ancestors. MACEDONIA FOREVER

  • Joseph F Osborne

The country south of Macedonia should look at its own economy before it speaks ill of Macedonia.  Maybe you’re all too busy looking for another handout from another country.  Your economy isn’t failing, it’s failed.  Enjoy the CCC credit rating while it lasts, the only step lower is “failed state” and you’re well on your way.

  • Filipvtori

    Greeks r jealous LoL

  • PL45

This is the type of behaviour you would expect of skopjians.  They want to ethnically cleanse the Macedonians for being Greek for living on their lands for thousands of years.  Skopjians already murdered all the Paionians and murdered all the Jews in the region.  They will fail with the Albanians though.

  • PL45

Macedonian for the Macedonians.  Not the Slavo-Bulgarians living on Paionia lands. Leave the Albanians in FYROM alone.

  • PL45

The country South of Macedonia is Egypt because Egypt is south of Greece and Macedonia is in Greece and has been Greek for thousands of years.

  • PL45

Fortunately the Academic community sides with Greece and not with FYROM.   Here is an excerpt from the Macedonian evidence movement.

    This effort to reduce ethnic
tensions was rescinded by Tito, who used the “Macedonian” identity as
leverage against Yugoslavia’s Greek and Bulgarian neighbors.  The
(mis)use  of the name Macedonia at that time was recognized by the
United States State Department in a dispatch of December 26, 1944, by
then U.S. Secretary of State Edward Stettinius:

    “The
Department [of State] has noted with considerable apprehension
increasing propaganda rumors and semi-official statements in favor of
an autonomous Macedonia, emanating principally from Bulgaria, but also
from Yugoslav Partisan and other sources, with the implication that
Greek territory would be included in the projected state. This
government considers talk of Macedonian ”nation”, Macedonian
“Fatherland”, or Macedonian “national consciousness” to be unjustified
demagoguery representing no ethnic nor political reality, and sees in
its present revival a possible cloak for aggressive intentions against Greece.”

  • Herodotus945

its FYROM utlra nationalists like you  that seem to be the “jealous” ones. Why else would you hide and oppress your own ethnic Bulgarian past and pretend to be “Macedonian”? Are you ashamed of your Bulgarian heritage?

  • Herodotus945

    @alexander:disqus -the-fakeski,

What happened to your past identity claims dear?

    “The creation
of the Macedonian nation, for almost half of a century, was done in a condition
of single-party dictatorship. In those times, there was no difference between
science and ideology, so the “Macedonian” historiography, unopposed by anybody,
comfortably performed a selection of the historic material from which the
“Macedonian” identity was created. There is nothing atypical here for the
process of the creation of any modern nation, except when falsification from
the type of substitution of the word “Bulgarian” with the word “Macedonian”
were made.” (Denko Maleski, former Minister of foreign affairs of FYROM
from 1991 to 1993 in an interview to FYROM newspaper Utrinski Vesnik)

    ‘We are not related
to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the
Great. We are a Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian.’
    - FYROM´s Ambassador to Canada Gyordan Veselinov, Ottawa Citizen Newspaper,
    February 24 1999

    We
are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century … We are not descendants
of the ancient Macedonians” – Kiro Gligorov, FYROM’s first President,

  • Herodotus945

What’s funny about your economic lessons… is even though Greece is in the middle of a severe depreesion….

    a. FYROM has far far more unemployment.
    b. FYROM has less than half the GDP/capita
    c. FYROM’s economy makes Greece look like Germay.

Perhaps if FYROM nationalists fanatics like you were more concerned with working rather than thieving the identity of macedonians your country could go forward.

  • Herodotus945

We will leave you alone as soon as you fanatics leave us alone. Greeks are the one’s trying to thief the identity of you former ethnic Bulgarians. Nor are we the ones producing maps of “United Macedonia”.

Macedonia for the Macedonians…. and Paeonia for the former self-identifying ethnic Bulgarians of the former Yugoslavia.

“It should be noted that there is NO CONNECTION between the Macedonians of the
time of Alexander the Great who were a GREEK tribe and today’s so-called ‘macedonians’ of the ‘Former Yugoslav Republic ofmacedonia’ or FYROM, who are of SLAVIC origin and related to BULGARIANS.” -David H Levinson, ‘The Encyclopaedia of Ancient Cultures’

  • Herodotus945

Macedonia forever indeed. Greeks love Macedonians and Macedonian culture. What we aren’t fond of is the former self-identifying ethnic Bulgarians now dishonestly pretending to be “ethnic Macedonians”

  • Herodotus945

If you really wanted to “celebrate your ancestors”… you’d stop calling yourselves “Macedonians” and stop oppressing your Bulgarian heritage. Are you ashamed of your Bulgarian ancestors?

‘Why are we ashamed and flee from
the truth that whole positive Macedonian revolutionary tradition comes exactly
from exarchist part of Macedonian people? We shall not say a new truth if we
mention the fact that everyone, Gotse Delchev, Dame Gruev, Gjorche Petrov, Pere
Toshev – must I list and count all of them – were teachers of the Bulgarian
    Exarchate in Macedonia.’

Minister of FYROM, Ljubco Georgievski, 2007, in his book ‘Facing the truth’)

Holy shit guys get the fuck over it. All people have the right to represent who they believe they are. Only God knows who we all are and from what we’ve come from. If Macedonians want to erect statues and museums good on them. They have a right to.

  • Aetos

There is a solution to this
    nations problem.

The land and area was since
    6 AD known as Moesia.

Just look it up and you will learn something that is a fact.

Moesia (Latin),  Μοισία (Greek) was an ancient region and later Roman Province
    situated in the Balkans.

    Skopje was actually an
ancient Roman settlement, first as a Roman Fort, which then developed into a
city. It’s real name was Scupi.

    Macedonians are Dorians by race
    just like the Lakonians.

    The Skopjians can think they
are Macedonians but they never will be the real Macedonians just like I am. A
Greek from the province or state of Makedonia.

And just to educate you a little
bit, Skopje was founded by the Romans. And so it belongs to Italy is that not
so. So your statues should be of Julius Ceasar and Nero.

It is so sad that instead of
spending your tax payers money of improving your schools and hospitals you spend
it on silly lies to lie to yourselves that you are something you are not.

We know what is the problem
with our governement and the mess they have put us all in, but at least we are aware
of the problem and we are going to deal with it.

    Alexander = Alex (helper) Ander
(man) = helper of men (a Greek name and words).

    Pomochnikchovek = helper of
man in the Slavic language, so your Skopjan Alexader the Great is Veliko
    Pomochnikchovek.

    Philipos = Phili (freind), ipos
(horse) = freind of horses ( a Greek name and words).

    Prijatelkoin = friend of horses
in the Slavic language, so your Skopjan Philipos is Prijatelkoin.

    So
i really see the similarity between the ancient Greek Macedonian language and
the Slavic Skopjan language of today.

  • Aetos

Hello Aleksandar Makedonski, i have not seen on any ancient Macedonian texts that the Macedonians called themselves Makedonski.

We do not have any “ski” on the end of our names in Ancient Macedonia.

But i will tell you where i have seen the ski on the end of names, i have seen it in Poland and i Russia also.

Sorry but you will have to change your first name to Pomochnikchovek and your last name to Moesieski.

Now i do recognise you as an ethnic Moesian and will support you to be a part of the EU and NATO.

Or you can also choose to name your nation “Alburia” or “Kleptonia”.

And you could be a Kleptonian or a Kleptomaniac.

  • Aetos

That is why i fight for my Makedonia, my Makedonia which is a province of Greece (Ellas).

Sorry to say Mr Whatevski, but the writing on the ancient Macedonian walls is in the Greek language.

  • Joseph F Osborne

First, it’s fitting you use the name Herodotus, the “Father of Lies.”  Second, I am an American (you know, that country halfway around the world that helps clean up your mess time and again?). Third, I (and my country) don’t recognize this “FYROM” you mention.  If you’re speaking about Macedonia, please allow me to bring up some facts for you.

    a. Macedonian public debt sits at $5.7 Billion, while your debt is (conservatively) $447 Billion. Considering the lack of economic / mathematic skills in your country in recent years, rest assured that’s nearly 100 times as much (feel free to use a calculator).
    b. Well, I don’t really need to put any more comments down for you.  You’re probably going to have your home, computer, and other belongings repossessed by the bank soon enough.  Enjoy your poverty!

  • Joseph F Osborne

Let’s PRETEND for a minute that the main point of your statement is factually correct. The country due South of Macedonia and yours is Libya, not Egypt.  Based on this very simple and easily verifiable fact, I believe any further explanation or attempt to educate you would be better spent doing something more productive with my time.  In fact, I believe I have some work to do.  I understand that is a concept you and your countrymen are no longer familiar with, but believe me, it is not only satisfying, it keeps you out of debt!

  • Cypriot

Let them waste their money convincing their people that they are decendants of Alexander the Great. The rest of the world doesn’t take them seriously so it doesn’t matter. Every educated person knows that Macedonia is Greek, and Alexander the Great was Greek – it’s written in every history book except those published in FYROM.

  • Anonymous

I find many FYROM nationalists set up all sorts of false flag accounts. But even running with your dubious claim… I suggest you open up a book on American history circa 1944 before making a further fool of yourself.
