Painting by Greek Artist to be Auctioned at Sotheby’s

The painting titled “At the Mosque” by Theodoros Jacques Rallis (1852-1909) will be put up for auction on Tuesday, April 24 at Sotheby’s Auction House.

Experts estimate that the painting may be auctioned for 200,000-300,000 pounds. The Sotheby’s exhibition includes works of orientalist painters and sculptors, including that of the Greek artist.

The most expensive may be the masterpieces of Russian artist Ivan Aivazovsky and Turkish painter Osman Hamdy Bey. The main motif of the Orientalism style of art is images of the Middle East and Northern Africa.

For the Europeans of the 19th century, Turkey, Egypt and other “oriental” countries seemed like exotic places. They were fascinated by the colors, the women, the religion; everything seemed different to their culture.

Sotheby’s Auction House has hosted several works of the Greek painter, all of them at high prices.
