Fire in Cypriot Mosque Fuels Political Issue

Fire broke out  in a mosque in Lemesos on Holy Saturday. Dervish Eroglu, head of the Turkish Cypriots, is blaming Greek Cypriots for the fire. He says they were encouraged by Orthodox clergymen.

“Such actions prove that Greek Cypriots dislike the Turkish,” commented the president, adding,”we are right not to trust them.”

Eroglu stated that Greek Cypriots, in contrast to the Turkish, are not willing to compromise. “They have burnt our mosques, shot against Muslim worshippers; that’s typical of the Greek Cypriot culture,” said Eroglu.

According to Cypriot police’s statement, the fire started in the ceiling of the mosque Ibrahim Aga. Police immediately called for help to put the fire out.

On the other side, Cypriot spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said that “the government refuses the attempt of Turkish Cypriot leadership to make the fire a political issue,” adding, “the Cypriot Republic respects the monuments and the religious sites of Turkish people, situated in free areas, which it also preserves.”

He did not hesitate to mention that Turkey, on the contrary, has destroyed several cultural and religious monuments in the occupied part of Cyprus.

“The little damage caused by the fire has already been restored,” stated Stefanou.
