Belgian “Le Soir”: Special Edition about Cyprus Presidency of The Council of the EU

Belgian newspaper Le Soir published an extensive special about the approaching Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in July 2012. The Belgian journalist who wrote the piece refers to the general political situation over the island in regards to the Presidency.

In their interview with Makis Polydorou, Head of the Asylum Service of the Ministry of Interior in Cyprus, he states that “the question of the asylum in the EU will definitely be part of the discussions, of which we will have during the Presidency.”

The Common European Asylum System, expected to be established by the EU, is of great importance, especially for countries such as Cyprus. “All around the world, everyone refers to human rights – the rights of the one or another group of people,” he continues.

Polydorou, who comes from Ammochostos, Cyprus, a city occupied by the Turkish people in 1974, stresses the need for human rights safeguarding.

“I was a teenager when the Turkish invaded Cyprus. Since then, I remember politicians promising a solution to Cypriots coming maybe the next year, and then the year after it and so on,” says the politician.

The official position of Cyprus is pretty clear. Minister of Interior Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis talks to Le Soir about the relation between the Cyprus problem and the Presidency. “They are two completely different subjects,” adds the Minister. The journalist comments, however, that it is difficult for someone to do this, since Cyprus continues living with its “old wounds.”

Cyprus is trying hard to assure that Europeans will have “a completely normal Presidency in the Council of the EU.”
