Eleven High School students from Thessaly were awarded for their mathematical distinctions and achievements during the 8th Festival of Greek Thessalians of Europe, held last Sunday in Dusseldorf, Germany. The Thessalian Festival was established in 2005 by the Federation of Thessalian Unions in Germany and other European countries, Vassilis Tsitsanis, and the Union of Thessalians in Dusseldorf.
The students traveled from Greece to Dusseldorf responding to the call of the Thessalians of Germany. Students from Trikala, Larissa, Magnesia and Karditsa, accompanied by the presidents of the Greek Mathematical Society of Trikala and Larissa, were honored for their excellent performance in mathematics.
The Festival was officially inaugurated by the President of the Federation, Diamantis Gkikas, who congratulated the Union of Thessalians in Dusseldorf for their remarkable activities. The President also stressed that the Federation plans to set and achieve higher goals, to celebrate as many festivals as possible, and to unite the Thessalians of Europe even more.
The Consul General in Dusseldorf, Plexidas Nikolaos, the Orthodox priest of the German city, Ioannis Psarakis, Alderman Ioannis Vatalis, member of PASOK National Council in Germany Konstantinos Tsatsis, the Presidents of the Greek Communities of Dusseldorf and Guetersloh, and others were among the attendees.
The dancing groups of Dusseldorf, Gueterdloh and Tuebingen, presented traditional dances and amazed the public. The event ended with a traditional Thessalian “Glenti,” by clarinet player Demetri Michale and singer Helene Thymioula.
