Cyprus Generates the Highest Amount of Municipal Waste Reports Eurostat

The amount of municipal waste generated per person in 2010 in the EU varies significantly across Member States, according to a recent Eurostat news release.

Cyprus, with 760 kg per person, had the highest amount of waste generated in 2010, followed by Luxembourg, Denmark and Ireland with values between 600 and 700 kg per person, and the Netherlands, Malta, Austria, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the United Kingdom and Portugal with values between 500 and 600 kg. On the other side, Latvia generated only 304 kg per person.

In Cyprus, 80% of municipal waste is being landfilled, 16% is being recycled and 4% composted. The EU average for waste landfilling accounted for 40%, Cyprus thus exhibits a double percentage. Additionally, the amount of waste being composed was less than 10% in only ten Member States, unfortunately including Cyprus.

Incineration, a method chosen particularly in Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands, seems not to be a common treatment method in Cyprus or Greece.

The municipal waste generated in Turkey is 407 kg per person for 2010.

In the 27 EU States, 502 kg of municipal waste was generated per person in 2010, while 486 kg of municipal waste was treated per person. The overall municipal waste was treated in different ways: 38% was landfilled, 22% incinerated, 25% recycled and 15% composted.
