Galata Greek Elementary School Returned to Greek Minority of Turkey

According to the decision of the Turkish General Directorate of Foundations Council, the Galata Elementary School building, registered under the Turkish State, will be returned to its Greek minority owners previous to theĀ confiscationĀ (Ephorate of the Community of Churches and Galata School).

ANA-MPA reported that this is the first decision of the General Directorate of Foundations Council, under the new law, which was published last August and, according to the webpage of the Association for the Support of Greek Community Foundations (www.rumvader.org), it is expected to, somewhat, set a precedent for the councilā€™s subsequent decisions too.

Laki Vingas, a member of the Foundations Directorate General, expressed his joy for the return of the confiscated property and added that this marks the beginning of the return of other properties in the future.

According to Hurriyet daily, officials from the GalataĀ GreekĀ Elementary School Foundation commented thatĀ bureaucratic proceedings could take about two months before the school is finally handed back.
