Berlin Worries Over Funding of Branch of Hellenic Foundation for Culture

The director of the Branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Berlin, Eleftherios Oikonomou, expressed his worries over the functioning of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, after the chairman of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Greece asked to prevent the functioning of the German branch until enough funding was found.

Oikonomou admits that the Berlin branch spends 25% of the government’s funding, but emphasizes that it does great work with plenty of activities and many sponsorships from various sources.

Moreover, Oikonomou emphasized that he fully understands the difficult economic times in Greece, but through the Berlin branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, the Greek presence in Germany is very strong.

Oikonomou emphasizes that it would be a strategic fault if Greece restricts its presence in Southeast Europe and especially in Germany, given the dominant role that Germany is playing at the moment within the European Union.

Notably, the Berlin branch is the only one in West Europe. Other branches of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture are located in Tirana, Belgrade, Alexandria, Odessa, Sofia, Bucharest, Trieste and Melbourne.
