Actress Susannah York Says ‘Scatter My Ashes on Paxos Beach in Greece’

Actress Susannah York left £2.7 million in her will – and made a last wish for some of her ashes to be scattered on her favorite Greek beach.

The will was drawn up three days before she died a year ago, at age 72, after a long battle against bone marrow cancer. Miss York, of Clapham, South London, asked to be cremated and for the bulk of her ashes to be scattered in the garden of her former home in nearby Wandsworth. She requested that the remainder should be dropped ‘on our beach in Paxos’, near the small holiday home she owned.

Miss York, who appeared in film, TV and theatre during a career that began in the 60’s, will be best remembered for her role as a uniformed section officer in Battle Of Britain in 1969. In the same year, she was also nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actress in They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?

Probate records released last week reveal that Miss York left £3,158,095, reduced to a net figure of £2,700,867 after payment of liabilities.

She left the bulk to her two children, Sasha, 39, and Orlando, 38, with legacies totaling £86,500 going to other relatives and friends.

Miss York, who was also known for championing a number of causes including the CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament), and opposing the destruction of rainforests, divorced her actor husband Michael Wells in 1976 after 16 years of marriage.
