Greek Travel Agencies Conduct Business Illegally In Bulgarian Mountain Resort

Bulgarian National Television (BNT) reported that Greek tour operators and travel agencies are operating illegal businesses in Bulgaria’s mountain ski resort of Bansko.
Only four foreign tourist companies have an operation license, according to the national tourist register. All others are operating illegally, the Bansko Tourist Association alleged, as cited in The Sofia Echo.
The winter resort of Bansko is popular with Greek tourists, who cross borders mostly on weekends in order to enjoy cheaper holiday and entertainment offers during the winter.
The Greek tour operators and tourist agencies accommodated Greek guests in apartments not categorized as lodging and did not pay taxes to the state. According to the BNT report, the Greeks employed unlicensed interpreters, guides and mountain teachers, unlike their Bulgarian counterparts. Local hoteliers and tourist agents demand immediate action to be taken, otherwise they feel the local economy will seriously be threatened. The Association of Bulgarian Tour Operators is now expected to strengthen monitoring controls.
