Germany has apologized for not being able to prevent the deaths of 10 people – eight Turks, one Greek and one German policewoman – at the hands of xenophobic neo-Nazis.
Merkel told a party congress of her conservative Christian Democratic Union that authorities would “do everything in their power” to track down all those responsible.
She and other party leaders put forward a motion calling for a fresh look at banning a neo-Nazi party, the NPD, after a previous attempt failed in 2003 on legal grounds.
Federal Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich voiced the apology and Federal Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger recalled that funds exist to compensate for damages and that relatives of the murder victims would be able to receive aid from these funds. The ministers spoke at a press conference after a summit on far-right terrorism in Berlin on Nov. 18.
Moreover, Christian Ude, the Social Democratic (SPD) mayor of the German city admitted gross errors by the security services in dealing with a new brand of far-right “terrorism” after revelations of a decade-long killing spree by neo-Nazis.
Finally, metropolitan Augoustinos of Germany underlined the necessity of the existence of a united Europe and that the current economic crisis should not become a cultural crisis.
