Beyoğlu Greek High School to be Granted Foundation Status After 41 Years

Turkey is granting back to non-Muslim communities the right to register their immobile assets as foundations and the Beyoğlu Central Greek High School will be the first non-Muslim minority foundation established in the country in the past 88 years.

Turkey’s Directorate General for Foundations have announced Tuesday its historical decision of granting back the foundation “status” to minority foundations from which it was taken before.

According to Today’s Zaman, VGM President Adnan Ertem pointed out that organizations of non-religious communities were given “foundation” status by the Treaty of Lausanne. He said three foundations were excluded at the time due to a legal technicality, adding that the recent decision to grant the Beyoğlu Central Greek High School foundation status had solved the problem, saying the two other foundations — one a Jewish and one an Armenian organization — would now be able to get foundation status. This will bring the total number of non-Muslim minority foundations in Turkey to 165.

From now on, the Greek High School for Girls will be legally considered a foundation with full control over its assets and able to provide its services and charity work to its community members.

The Greek High School lost its foundation status back in 1970, but kept functioning as a private school until 1999. Afterwards, the school had to shut down because there were no students to attend it. And even if they had been some, it had no right to provide its services due to its peculiar legal status. Ever since, the High School began a legal fight, which has finally bore fruits.
