European Parliament: Today’s Session and Measures Under Discussion

by Katerina Palamiotis, Afroditi Lakkiotis

Today, the 16th of November, the ongoing sovereign debt crisis as well as the necessity to re-evaluate its confrontation strategy, were the main issues discussed this morning during the plenary session of the European Parliament. The revision of the European Union’s Treaties is considered necessary for the support of the common economic government and to this end the cooperation among the National Parliaments and the European Parliament via open and transparent procedures is needed.

The European Council President, Herman Van Rompuy demanded that the “de-dramatization” and the rumors concerning the two tier Europe  stop.

The European Commission President José Manuel Barroso underlined that the stronger economic governance now is not only a matter of the ideals of those in favour of Europe but also a matter of common sense. “The recent crisis has revealed our interdependence and the need to reach common solutions. “, Barroso said.

Finally, the Eurogroup President Jean-Claude Juncker, mentioned that the so-called economic semester should be more political and less technocratic. The EU’s economic policy coordination cannot remain strictly in the hands of the finance ministers, he added.

Furthermore, the German socialist leader, Martin Schulz  declared  that “Italy and Greece need investment and growth and this is what we should focus on during this morning session. Both countries have to deal with high indebtedness and speculation.” In response to Mr. Van Rompuy, Mr Schulz said that the European Parliament should not be  a think-tank but an Institution that owes to find the best solutions for its members as is about to happen with the adoption of the six-pack legislation.

On the other hand another German MEP  Lothar Bisky wondered: “How expanded must the crisis become before you realise what should be done? People want social equality and less tax injustice, and it is essential to fairly distribute the burden of the reforms undertaken.

Finally, the British MEP Nigel Farrage declared that “Today, one country,Germany dominates. This is exactly what EU was set up to prevent. I do not want to be under German rule!” he concluded.
