Prof. Vassos Karageorghis Receives Archaeology Award 2011

The Archaeology Award 2011 was presented this year to Prof. Vassos Karageorghis for his significant contribution to Cypriot archaeology for over 50 years, in an official ceremony on November 3 at Famagusta Gate Cultural Centre, Nicosia, under the auspices of the Ministry of Communications and Works.

The Archaeology Award was established by the Council of Ministers in 2002 to encourage the preservation and promotion of the archaeological heritage of Cyprus. It is awarded every two years to “individuals or foundations who have demonstrated excellence in the preservation, protection and promotion of our archaeological heritage”.

Prof. Karageorghis is widely known for bringing the ancient Salamis to light and until now continues to work vigorously for the preservation and promotion of Cyprus cultural heritage. He is one of the most important figures in Cypriot archaeology, and his numerous published books and articles have been recognized as important manuals worldwide.

Prof. Karageorghis is the former director of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus and Professor Emeritus of Archaeology at the University of Cyprus. He also was until recently director of the Ananstasios G. Leventis Foundation, which supports many archaeological projects, among other cultural charities in Cyprus. Prof. Karageorghis is also a member of the Scientific Expert Panel of the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC) of The Cyprus Institute.
