Greek School of Lausanne Celebrates Over 40 Years

The Greek School of Lausanne celebrated on November 6 over 40 Years of continuous and successful running. The celebrating event was co-organized by the Parents Association and the Greek Association of Lausanne “Estia”, while it was attended by the Permanent Representative of Greece, Ambassador Mr. George Kaklikis, the General Consultant of Greece in Geneva Mr. Nikolaos Bazas, the Greek-Swiss MP Mr. Joseph Zisiadis, representative of the Greek Embassy in Bern Mrs. Olga Kliamaki and several representatives from the local and church authorities.

A brief historical overview of the school’s function over the years was presented during the event as well as a commemorative scrapbook under the title “40+ Years Greek School of Lausanne”, which records the school’s history and includes archives, personal testimonies and experiences of students, parents and teachers.

This year, the Greek School has 78 students in the classes of kindergarten, primary and junior high school.

Since the 1960s, the preservation of the Hellenism through the teaching of the Greek language was seen as a priority by the Greek community in Lausanne. It has tried to advocate and transmit the Greek culture, traditions and language to the younger generations. The community’s efforts have bore fruits after 40 years with many Greek children being able to write, think, and feel in their mother tongue despite having been born in a different country.

The community now wishes to continue its efforts and support the Greek School’s role in maintaining the Greek identity in every possible way.

Under the encouragement of teacher Flora Blazoudaki and other colleagues, the event became a fundraising opportunity with the money raised to be delivered to the NGO “Arc of the World” active in Athens.
