Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Austria Michael Passes Away

Metropolitan Michael of Austria and Exarch of Hungary and Mid-Europe passed away at the age of 65 after losing the fight against cancer.

The Metropolitan was born in Athens on November 22, 1946 and He was elected as Assistant Bishop of the Orthodox Metropolitanate of Austria in 1985, to be elevated in 1991 to the rank of Metropolitan.

The Metropolitan of Austria suffered from pancreas cancer and was undergoing treatment for the past several months. His condition had been stabilized after surgery but it deteriorated unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon.

Michael of Austria was awarded with the Golden Commander’s Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Austria. He received the honorary distinction in honor of his long service as Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and President of the Episcopal Conference in Austria, and especially for his contribution and support towards the integration of the Orthodox faith in the Austrian Community.

The funeral service will be held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Vienna  today Tuesday, October 25 and is expected to be attended by the Austrian state leadership, foreign government delegations, religious leaders and faithful.
