Greek Students Win Food Competition in Cologne

Students from Greece secured the first position in the ‘Ecotrophelia 2011′ food competition within the Anuga food and drinks’ exhibition, gaining international attention. The competition for the creation of innovative food products was held this year in Cologne from the 8th to the 12th of October with an emphasis on the integration of eco-responsibility.

The winning food product is called “Da Vero – Eco Seafood Cold Cuts”, created by the team of the University of Ioannina and Greek Open University. This product is a combination of seafood and by-products of the food Industry, selected for 1st place by the Greek Association of Food Industries.

Except for Greece, eleven teams of European students took part in the food competition, such as: Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Russia, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland. Each country demonstrated innovative, environmentally friendly food products but only the Greek one managed to reach the top of the competition.

Evangelos Kalousis, chairman of the Greek Association of Food Industries commented on the competition, praising the winning team and added: ” We are so happy that, within a current economic crisis, Greek food industries’ competitiveness and workforce proved to be a motivation for development in order to pull through the crisis”.
