Sotheby’s “Greek Sale” Becomes Part of “European Paintings”

Yiannis Moralis’ “Full Moon L” is one of the masterpieces opening the new Greek Sale of Sotheby’s on November 22, which will be included in the overall auction exhibition “European Paintings” for the first time since 2001 . Hard times affecting not only Greece but the whole world too, require a more realistic approach on behalf of London’s auction house.

Senior director of Sotheby’s Greek Sale Mr. Frangos said that “Current behavior and tendencies displayed by potential bidders, who compete with one another in order to get a Greek painting, has made us include the Greek Sale exhibition into a wider auction project, which will enable us to serve our customers’ interests more efficiently”. Mr. Frangos was the one who brought the Greek Sale idea to life and holds a record of selling Greek paintings at Sotheby’s.

Unique artifacts, such as Yiannis Moralis’ “Full Moon L” (1916-2009) and Eggonopoulos’ painting paying tribute to Greek history and Alexander the Great will be some of the most recognised paintings in the coming auction and their estimated worth lies between 340,000-570,000 euros and 100,000-150,000 English pounds respectively.

Theodoros Rallis (1852-1909) is another Greek artist, whose magnificent paintings are to be auctioned on November the 22nd. His painting “Good Friday” is worth 340,000-540,000 euros and “The Sleeping Concubine” has auction value at about 91,000-136,000 euros.

Moreover, “Countryside” by Nikos Chatzikyriakos-Ghikas celebrating the beauty of Greek nature and “Sifnos” by Professor Panayiotis Tetsis celebrating the Aegean landscape will also take part in the November auction in London.
