Vilnius Mayor Wants to Acquire Greek Island for Lithuanian Tourists

Vilnius mayor Arturas Zuokas, better known for crushing an illegal parked car with an armoured vehicle, suggested today that his country should buy an island from recession-hit Greece for ca. 7 million euros.

According to the controversial mayor, the acquired island would be turned into a holiday resort for tourists from Lithuania.

“After the island’s registration by Lithuanian government, it wouldn’t just be an exclusive place for rest in the Mediterranean for our citizens, but also a great global advert for Lithuania,” he said in a statement.

According to AFP information, Zuokas said the island could host a tourism bureau, spa, museums and theatre, as well as the residence of the Lithuanian ambassador to Greece.

“Vilnius is deeply in debt. Zuokas simply seeks cheap attention instead of taking care of Vilnius’s residents” councilor Vidas Urbonavicius told AFP.
