Gennimata’s Bill Concerning Greek Language Education Abroad

The new bill of the Ministry of Education concerning Greek language education abroad worsens the relations between Greece and the Hellenic Diaspora. The new bill that has been changed many times before will not be applicable over time, not only regarding Greek language Education of Diaspora but also the maintenance and the promotion of Greek Education and culture worldwide.

The German-Greek Trade Association (DHW) has defined its proposal about Greek Language Education abroad and the role that it plays regarding progress and integration of Greeks into the job market of Germany, Greece and Europe in general.

The Trade Association does not insist on the maintenance of Greek Schools in Germany. But there are still studens attending these schools. When the government decides to stop maintenance of these Greek Schools, they should make that change gradually for the students.

As far as career guidance is concerned, DHW has been demanding for many years the entry of a course about career guidance into Greek language schools. The previous government accepted this request and a regular special advisor has been elected. But, the bill neither provides such an election nor anything relevant to this. Instead of this, article 10 of the bill titled ‘ Vocational Training’ defines what Greek and foreign institutes of professional training will accept.
