German Press Comments on Greek Prime Minister’s Talk

Prime Minister George Papandreou’s appeals for Germans to respect the sacrifices of the Greek people are reported extensively in the German press today.

Papandreou’s visit to Berlin was about seeking “respect”, the Hamburg weekly ‘Die Zeit’ comments in its online edition, adding that the Greek Prime Minister’s visit occurred when Germany and Greece “couldn’t be more different”: the former with its growth and low unemployment, the latter with its recession and bailouts.

Moreover, according to the ‘Bild’, which strongly opposed Germany adopting the euro a decade ago, Merkel is not entirely convinced that Greece can pull through, despite her public assurances of support made during Papandreou’s visit.

Finally, an article taken from the ‘Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’ continues to state that politicians in countries which are providing the rescue funds, such as Germany, will not be swayed by such promises and solidarity appeals alone, because of the intense opposition from their own voters.

According to unknown sources, Merkel told MP yesterday afternoon that while she wanted to prevent Greece from going bankrupt, she “couldn’t rule out” the possibility of it happening.
