Greek Origin Former Mayor of Moscow Advisor to Current Mayor

The Mayor of Moscow and head of the local government of the Russian capital, Sergei Sobyanin, appointed Greek origin, first post-soviet Mayor of Moscow, Gavriil Popov as his advisor.

According to the Moscow Times, Popov volunteered for the job.

Gavriil Popov was born on October 31st 1936, and graduated from the Moscow Lomonosov University with a degree in Political Economy. He pursued an academic career, worked as the editor of the journal “Economic Affairs”, and during the Perestroika period in 1989, was elected to the Congress of People’s Deputies. He was one of the co-chairman of the Interregional Group of Deputies that stood for democratization.

In March of 1990, Popov was elected to the City Council, as a candidate of “Democratic Russia”, and on April 20th 1990 he was appointed chairman. In June 1991, Popov was elected Mayor of Moscow, but he retired on June 6th 1992, to be succeeded by Deputy Mayor Yury Luzhkov, who served until September 2010.

G. Popopv is the President of Moscow’s International University, and has received several scientific distinctions from universities around the world.
