Bartholomew Says Sumela is a Boon for Black Sea

Patriarch Bartholomew stated to reporters on Monday,  after leading religious services in the gardens of the Sumela Monastery, that the monastery was a great boon for the Black Sea.

The historical place of worship is located in Macka Town in Trabzon.  Founded in the year 386 AD during the reign of the Emperor Theodosius I, the Greek Orthodox monastery, stands at the foot of a steep cliff facing the Altindere valley in Macka, at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters.

In 2010, the government allowed religious ceremonies to be held in the monastery for the first time in 88 years.

The monastery will be open to visitors before and after the religious service hours starting August 15.  Last year’s service was also conducted by Patriarch Bartholomew.
