Over 300 Bulgarians Commute to Greece

Every day, over 300 Bulgarians from the towns of Svilengrad, Lyubimets and Harmanli cross the Bulgarian – Greek border twice a day, leaving for work in Greece in the morning, and returning to Bulgaria in the late afternoon.

Most of them are field hands in Greece who pick cotton, olives and plow vineyards. Greece hires hundreds of Bulgarian workers who are faced with devastating unemployment rates at home. A day’s wage averages from 20 to 40 euros, while construction workers can earn up to 100 euros a day.
