Turkish-Cypriot Company Offers Electricity to Southern Cyprus

In spite of some objections by politicians of the Opposition, after the interference of the General Public Prosecutor, the proposal of the Turkish-Cypriot Company to offer 80MB of electricity was accepted.

There have been some small technical problems in the beginning, but the necessary equipment was sent to complete the connection in the Nicosia-region of Sopaz. According to a government spokesperson, the power distribution is permitted by the Green Line Regulation.
On Thursday, 110 containers with equipment from Greece will also arrive. For this reason, Greek technicians arrived in Cyprus last Wednesday, July 13th, to prepare the necessary infrastructures. The 80MB from the Occupied Territories and the 70 from Greece will cover 1/3 of the need for power after the explosion at the Vasilikos Station, as 400MB is needed in total.
The political parties of the opposition were against this proposal. As politicians claimed, this will be used as an argument for the official recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a state and that the government of Mr. Christofias chose to be humiliated and can not deal with a national disaster caused by their neglect.
The Cyprus Green Party wondered why the government took this decision in a hurry when they could cover the needs by installing photovoltaic systems, while the Cyprus Social Ecology Movement expressed their concerns for air and earth pollution in the area after the massive explosion at the Naval Base.
