Greeks Travel to Turkey to Purchase Goods On Trust

Due to the economic crisis, many Greeks are traveling to border towns of Turkey to purchase goods on trust and credit. They are mainly interested in buying baklava, bread, dough and clothes.
Merchants of the northwestern Turkish border city of Edirne say that their Greek clients come to the city to purchase goods and frequent the city’s Friday Bazaar and always used to spend away; now they are bargaining to achieve even a tiny reduction of the price of the goods. They believe that their Greek clients are very honest and they always bring the money they owe in time so the merchants sometimes let them take goods without even a promissory note. They understand that Greece is on the verge of a default so they feel obliged to help their neighbours and they don’t discriminate against them. They also wish that the Greek economy recovers as that would be good for their own local market as well.
Turkish entrepreneurs have already shown a keen interest to make Turkish-Greek investments as some Greek islands are on sale.
