Maria Kouri, Lecturer from the University of Peloponnese, addressed a presentation about Greek Mythology in Baroque and Classical Opera projects, during a lecture held at the old City Hall of Vienna, organized by the Cypriot Cultural Center of Vienna.
The lecture was attended by numerous Austrian friends of Greece and Cyprus, members of the Greek Diaspora and representatives of both countries’ agencies in Austria.
The lecture was accompanied by a presentation of selected excerpts from Opera pieces by Monteverdi, Gluck, and Motzart – all incorporating Greek mythology references in their works – interpreted by internationally renowned Cypriot baritone, Kyros Patsalides, promising Greek Soprano, Katerina Kouri and French descent mezzo, Alice Ferier, in piano accompaniment by a young conductor from Thessaloniki, Constantinos Diminakis.
The lecture on “Hegemony Theories and Greek Mythology in Baroque and Classical Opera”, was focused on ways in which Greek mythology is employed through opera in the Baroque and Classical Era, as a means of expressing the views and central ideas of the 17th and 18th century, in regard to desirable and undesirable characteristics of a ruler, in addition to the ideal role he must assume.
