Greek-French actor, Denis Podalydès stars as Sarkozy in the French film La Conquête (The Conquest). The film covers the five years in the run-up to Nicolas Sarkozy’s election in 2007 and his split with his then wife, Cécilia. “In playing Sarkozy, the least I can do is not judge him and above all not caricature him. My role will be to make him human, give him depth, play on his contradictions,” says Podalydès. When the French President was informed about the movie cast, he stated: “This is not fair! He (Denis Podalydès) has less hair than me!
Film-maker and director, Xavier Durringer has gone to extreme lengths to ensure accuracy and the film may be extremely embarrassing for Sarkozy. Durringer called up actor Denis Podalydès to play Sarkozy and Florence Pernel as Cécilia. Patrick Rotman, a historian and documentary maker, is writing the screenplay. La Conquête is due to be released late next year, just before the presidential elections in 2012.
