German Chancellor Angela Merkel will pay a short working visit to Cyprus on Jan. 11th, the Cyprus government announced Tuesday.
It will be the first ever visit to the Mediterranean island by a German head of state . The visit is expected to touch upon the Cyprus problem and Turkey’s bid to join the European Union.
Merkel, along with France’s President Nicolas Sarkozy, has repeatedly come out in favor of a special relationship for Turkey.
Turkey has time and again accused German and France of hiding behind the Cyprus issue to cover their objection to it becoming a full member.
The government spokesman in Nicosia confirming the visit by Merkel, said this reflects recognition for Cyprus’ international standing and the fact that it is not an isolated state.
Merkel will depart the same day on Jan. 11th, after talks with Cypriot President Demetris Christofias.
