Turks Above EU Average for Calls, Social Networking

More than half of young people between 16 and 24 (54%) in Turkey make calls and video calls over the internet.  This figure is significantly above the European average of 35%.
The trend is also confirmed among the 25-54 (44%) and 55-74 (34%) age groups, compared to a European average of 26% and 20% respectively. The figures come from new Eurostat findings, which show Turks to be ahead of the French, Italians, Greeks and Spanish.  They are surpassed only by Bulgarians, Latvians, Lithuanians and Slovakians.
Turkey has also seen a boom in social networking, chat and blogs, with 59% of people between 25 and 54 using the tools, compared to an average of 42% in the EU. The figure for Turks between 55 and 74 is 34%, double that for Europeans of the same age.  Young people between 16 and 24 in Turkey are marginally behind their European counterparts (76% compared to 80%). However, these services are still enjoyed by relatively few people in Turkey. The country is behind Europe in terms of internet access (42% against 70% in the EU), broadband (34% against 61% in the EU) and email use, with lower figure for the 16-24s (80% against 91%), 25-54s (69% against 89%) and 55-74s (62% compared to 86% in Europe).
