A group of men accused of an attack which left a British holidaymaker in a coma have lost a High Court battle to block their extradition to Greece.
Curtis Taylor, 20, Daniel Bell, 21, Sean Branton, 20, all from Horley, Benjamin Herdman, 20, from Worth, Sussex and George Hollands, 22, from Reigate in Surrey, insist they are innocent but now could face months in a Greek jail awaiting trial.
The men face allegations of causing grievous bodily harm to former semi-professional footballer Robbie Hughes who was attacked outside a Crete nightclub in June 2008.
Former Sutton United and Croydon Athletic player Mr Hughes, of Wallington, now suffers from a brain injury and ten-year memory loss because of the assault.
He was in a Greek hospital for three months undergoing a series of brain operations but has now recovered to the extent that he is playing football again.
Earlier this month lawyers asked the High Court to overturn the extradition decision after “new evidence” showed the Greek jail the men could be sent to was “drug ridden, mice-infested and insanitary”.
A sixth man, Joseph Bruckland, 20 from Hookwood, Surrey, will have a separate hearing of the same case.
