Greek artist plays with fire in new exhibit in İstanbul

Greek artist Costas Tsoclis brings together mythological and everyday heroes through the prism of the catastrophic forest fires that broke out in Greece in the summer of 2007 in his new exhibition at İstanbul’s Sismanoglio Megaro.
Titled “Prometheus Imprudent,” referring to the Greek mythological figure who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals, the exhibition showcases video footage, burning photographs, 50 small paintings with the artist’s aphorisms in the Turkish language and a selection of paintings. The displayed works are said to make the audience feel as though the whole building were ablaze.
The exhibition, curated by art historian and J.F. Costopoulos Foundation artistic director Katerina Koskina, is sponsored by the İstanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency, the Consulate General of Greece in İstanbul and the State Museum of Contemporary Art. It is complemented by a trilingual catalogue in Turkish, English and Greek. The catalogue photographs are by Giorgos Triantafyllou, and the video production and editing is by Chronis Pechlivanidis.
“Prometheus Imprudent” will run through May 23 at Sismanoglio Megaro on İstiklal Caddesi in Beyoğlu.
