Greek souvlaki at the forefront of the fight against obesity in Britain

9999Chain restaurant “The Real Greek” was the first to include the number of calories in each dish. Many followed, but as it turned out the Greek souvlaki has fewer calories than many European dishes and is the most popular delight in London.

The «Real Greek», is a creation of Greek chef Theodoris Kyriakou, serves a chicken skewer that has only 177 calories and offers a more light vegetarian choice with halloumi that has only 118 calories. Even the classic pork skewer is 280 calories , which is nothing compare to a  675 calories contained in the Greek salad and 800 of fish roe salad, according to the list of «Real Greek».

The British government is looking on the possibility of making the calories menu display in all fast food chain restaurants a requirement, in an effort to fight obesity.

If the measure finds support from health agencies, consumers and restaurant owners, the government will recommend this summer, a voluntary calories labeling in menus of restaurants. The aim is to imitate New York and other U.S. cities that require by state law, all  restaurants to display calorie information for each dish on their menu.

So far, the most strong supporters of the measure in Britain are those who are in diet, the fashionable restaurant chains, and government agencies. The medium-sized restaurant owners hate the idea because it’s difficult to implement, the fast food will probably have to comply to the new rules.
