Greek properties are confiscated in Constantinople for the purpose of… building malls

A confiscation plan of the property of Greeks of Constantinople, who were deported or expelled after 1964, seems to be rekindled by Turkish authorities for the shores of Bosporus. As it has been reported world wide by expatriates from Constantinople, the City Council intends to build new malls through the confiscation and demolishment of Greek expatriates’ property! At the same time, the authorities are making efforts to force the trespassers of Greek property, who are in majority internal immigrants from Kurdish provinces of the East, to move 70 kilometers outside the city. The poor residents of those buildings have created a citizens’ movement in order to prevent through court measures their internal displacement. On the occasion of this recent development, the Greek associations of Constantinople have been informed.
The Ecumenical Federation of Constantinopolitans and local associations have been currently engaged in a “race” to inform all Greek owners, possible relatives and/or descendants that their properties are in danger. At this stage, the relatives of Chrysostomos Aimilios Constantinides, Solon Lambrinides, Elissavet Alats Costakis and Eleni Ksanthou Spyridonos, are being sought in order to take measures to prevent this.
“This plan is aimed towards the elimination of all properties of Greeks from Constantinople” states Nikos Ouzounoglou, president of the Ecumenical Federation. “A similar operation is already in progress at the Balata district, near the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Phanar. In fact, on Saturday, I was informed that three properties of Vlachernon Community are also in danger”.
