An article entitled “We are all Greeks” written by the Italian Professor of Ancient Roman and Greek Law in the University of Milan, Eva Cantarella (foto), is published today in the newspaper “Corriere della Sera”.
The title of the article is reference to the quote made by the British poet and Philhellene, Percy Shelley during the start of the 1821 Revolution.
The Italian Professor, making a short reference to the 19th century but also to the classical period, wants to remind the Europeans their debt, as she stresses, towards Greece. At the same time, she calls for substantial solidarity towards Greece.
“In 1821, reference was made to the Greek miracle which took place in a country whereby during the 5th Century BC, philosophy, history, arts, democracy, i.e. civilization were developed” writes Eva Cantarella in her article.
The Professor explains that “today we know that the Greeks used to maintain contact with other nations of the Mediterranean and that many aspects of their civilization are a result of eastern influences. This, however, does not reduce our debt towards these people”.
Eva Cantarella also provided the example of History writing, which was initially developed by the Greeks as a form of literature.
With reference to today’s situation, Ms. Cantarella emphasizes that “it is surprising and leaves us speechless, the fact that Europe today, or at least a part of our continent seems to be so indifferent to the fate of the country which set the foundations for our civilization, not only on European level but also for the West. In this case, I believe it is our duty to repeat, with Shelley that, we are all Greeks”.
«We are all Greeks» stresses Professor Eva Cantarella and requests European solidarity towards Athens
