Emir Kusturica flies to ‘Pelican’

Serbian helmer-thesp Emir Kusturica will topline helmer Olivier Horlait’s coming-of-ager “Nicostratos the Pelican.”
Kusturica will play a Greek widower who distances himself from his son, who adopts a pelican.
The directorial debut of Horlait, who worked as a.d. on Milos Forman’s “Valmont,” “Pelican” was written by Horlait and Eric Boisset, and based on Boisset’s book. Pic’s produced by Alain Grandgerard and Stephane Meterfi for France’s Wesh Wesh Prods. Studio 37 will co-produce.
Pelican” will use the bird trainer and some of the pelicans from Jacques Perrin’s “Winged Migration.”
With a budget set at $8.6 million by Other Angle — of which $700,000 is for the birds — “Pelican” was unveiled to buyers at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in Paris.
Sold internationally by Other Angle Pictures, pic shoots in Greece in April and May.
