Helping hand for Greeks remaining in Imvros and Tenedos

Members of the Society for Study and Listing of Diaspora Hellenism – with the main coordinators being its president, Dr. Constantine Paschalidis, and the editor of the “Akrita” newspaper of Xanthi, Evangelos Vasiliadis – have planned and realised an ambitious program for offering primary health care to 260 elderly Greek inhabitants of the islands of Imvros and Tenedos in Turkey.
The scheme is considered ambitious and bold because of the special conditions prevailing on the islands in the health sector that prohibit the medical activities by “third parties” and allow health care to be conducted solely by Turkish state bodies, which, however, do not reach that far. Moreover, the only elderly Greek doctor, who moved from Constantinople to Imvros, died many years ago, leaving the aged patients to their fate.
